We started the wonderful process of learning to play our recorders. Parents can thank me later for this gift of the holiday season! I'm sure you are enjoying the musical treat you get each night as your fourth grader practices their recorders.

Visit from Grandma and Grandpa Jones
Grandma and Grandpa Jones (Mrs. Morrison's parents) finally made their way back to Utah from New York. We anxiously have been awaiting their visit to our classroom. We have been talking about "Christmas Around the World," so they introduced Christmas in Germany to us (they also lived in Germany for three years). The big surprise was when Grandpa Jones brought out a "beanie baby" (from his collection of hundreds) to give to each fourth grader. They were able to choose one from the collection or take one someone else had already chosen. We had a fun time and everyone left happy with a beanie baby of their own. We look forward to many more visits from Grandma and Grandpa Jones.
Mountain Man Rendezvous
We had a great time at our rendezvous. We enjoyed shooting for buffalo, singing and eating our mountain man beans around the campfire, arm/leg wrestling, rounding up the cattle, long jump and ended the whole thing with some dancing.

Lots of learning in November
**THANKSGIVING MATH
Each fourth grader was given a store add to see if they could do a shopping list for Thanksgiving dinner under $30. They had to be careful how they spent their money. They learned very fast how quickly $30 adds up. They used their adding, subtracting, division, multiplying, estimating and calculator skills with this activity.
**SPELLING FUN WITH THE WORD "THANKSGIVING"
After the letter cards were all scrambled, we had races with each group to spell the word Thanksgiving. Each group then had to come up with words within the word Thanksgiving. They did an amazing job working together and getting their minds thinking.
**NATIVE AMERICAN HOMES!
Wow! Each year I can't believe what types of homes are created. Each home is made with such great creativity! Thank you parents for all your help and support with this project. During this social studies unit, we have learned about each of the groups that helped settle our state: the Native Americans, pioneers, explorers and mountain men and the other immigrants that came into our state. We will finish up this unit this week.

Spooky Fun!
We had a great time during our Halloween festivities. A HUGE thanks to Mrs. Joosten and all of our room mothers for putting this together. The kids had a great time with all the games and especially the yummy "BOO BREWS" to eat. Enjoy the pictures and slideshow.

Halloween Art
We are excited to start our Great Artist lessons this month. Thanks to Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Knight for helping out in this department. We enjoyed doing some Halloween chalk art to help display our Halloween Senses poems that we wrote and typed up. The finished product looks great on our bulletin board. (Sorry to all you moms who had to clean chalk out of shirts! I tried hard to push all sleeves up that day!)

Cassie and Tyler spent their hard earned money on a lunch auction with their teacher. We enjoyed a great lunch from good 'ole Burger King. We had such a good time eating and talking. Our next lunch auction will be the first part of February.

Lots to get caught up on: first aid, fun run & September Reading Incentive
September has been filled with some exciting events. Even though our field trip to Silver Lake had to be canceled, we still found time to fill our days with learning and fun.
First, we enjoyed a week long unit on learning some first aid basics. Thank you to Ms. Taylor for coming with "Annie" and showing us some tips on rescue breathing.
Second, the PTA sponsored a very well organized "fun run" fundraiser event. The kids enjoyed running through the neighborhood with their classmates and enjoyed a treat of oranges and bagels at the finish line. A huge thanks goes out to our PTA, all volunteers and sponsors who donated money for this event.
We only had one injury. She was a real "trooper!"
Third, we enjoyed apples and caramels for our September reading incentive. Keep up the great job of reading 20 minutes each night and recording those facts and feelings. A new "orange" reading calendar for October was sent home on Wednesday. Each child will be required to read a "Mystery" chapter book this month and complete a book report on that book that was read. All information is on the reading calendar for the month. All calendars, facts and feelings, and book report are due on NOVEMBER 2nd.

Review of week's events
We have had a busy week with many different events.
Monday: We started our week off at the symphony. The buses always drop us off early which means we have to wait. We were glad it wasn't raining on us, but the kids were patient as we waited in the hot sun. We enjoyed several musical pieces from the Utah Symphony. You would have been proud of your fourth grader's symphony "etiquette!" They were all great.
Tuesday: We started our new math chapter on place value. We are learning to recognize numbers to the millions, including saying them, putting them in order, learning the values of the numbers and determining which is greater using the greater than and less than symbols. We will begin some rounding and reviewing of adding/subtracting with regrouping. This is a big unit with lots to cover. Math will keep us busy.
Wednesday: I should have taken a picture of our FIRST ever busy buck store this year. The kids had a great time shopping. A big thanks goes to Mrs. Pond for being a great store manager. We look forward to our next store in two weeks.
Thursday: After being shut in ALL day long because of a gas leak in the area, we created our salt dough landform maps of Utah. Thank you to everyone for sending in the salt dough. The kids REALLy enjoyed this activity.
